First of all the weather here will be as warm or probably warmer than London this week. Tips are:
1. Save money on a cab to or from the airport if staying in midtown. Use the Long Island railroad which is an eighth of the price and faster than sitting in heavy traffic
2. Explore Brooklyn. Walk the Bridge. Explore Brooklyn heights and Brooklyn Bridge Park. Go to prospect park and explore neighboring park slope, some nice bars and restaurants there.
3. Avoid Jersey City and the malls there. Nothing to do.
4. Walk through it once but otherwise Avoid Times Square. Neighboring Hell’s Kitchen is not overrun by tourists and has some nice bars and restaurants.
5. West side waterfront is nice. Start at battery park and walk up. Very pleasant on a nice day. Stroll around west village.
6. Met museum of art is a must. Don’t pay the recommended entry. ($20 ish) just pay what you want to enter, I give $5.
7. Don’t use cabs. Subway or walk.

Coney Island home of the Warriors! As the MRS works with animals we went to the Bronx Zoo. Interesting walk form the subway to the Zoo.

I concur what Mo Mo said... New York Pass is great VFM.... we also visited the SS Intrepid (US Aircraft Carrier) down by the waterfront... also has a concorde and a Space Shuttle (the shit prototype one not like the proper ones at KSC) really enjoyable half day there... some great little bars down that way as well

The Metropolitan Museum of Art and MOMA are worth a visit
Never been that taken by the Guggenheim though

Am going Friday week myself
Hoping to wrangle a NY Knicks ticket as they are playing Cleveland (ie Lebron James)

I'll second exchange place and Hoboken. There's a mall at pavonia/Newport if that's your thing (I think the tax in nj is lower than nyc)

I have been twice. The second time I used their subways to travel around as the bus routes were stuck in traffic. I recommend the uptown and down buses as you can get off when you like and back on again but the trains are equally as good. There is an amazing restaurant in the city called Carmine's. The portion sizes are huge but equally nice. You must go there. Other than that, Little Italy is a great place to eat though out of the way. Have a good time

Oh and buy the New York Pass... (there's an app).

Pricey up front but you won't then need to pay to get in to a load of places (ESB, Liberty, Rock etc) and you will save loads in the long run (we saved about $200 each).

I this time last year Woody SON. Weather was about minus 10 with the wind chill so might need to wrap up. Part of NY State had 6 feet of snow overnight.

My one tip would be to not use the Subway unless you have to, walk as much as you can as you will miss so much shooting backwards and forwards on the trains.

Walk across the Brooklyn Bridge (be careful it's a lot longer walk than it looks)... go to the Brooklyn Bridge Park... some great places to eat and drink... and half the price what you pay across the Hudson... stick to the Coney Island Brew rather than the Brooklyn Lager which tastes like dishwater... it's the best place to get the Iconic photo shots of the Manhattan skyline... got some incredible shots at dusk...

American Museum of Natural History.... it's about double the size of our NH Museum in London... I gave it half a day there and we did not even touch it... fantastic place...

Get out to the Bronx and see Yankee Stadium... MLS play off's at mo... Great stadium and built to what a stadium should look like... Oh Beers MASSIVELY pricey

Top of the Rock during the day and Empire State Building during the night

Ferry to Ellis Island and Statue of Liberty is great... we done it when they had their eclipse... quite a sight

Ground zero... not done the museum but the Firefighters mural was enough to bring a lump to the throat.... the Freedom Tower there now is quite a sight...

Loved NY and loved the people... it's pricey as fuck (think double London in some places) in Manhattan but you can save a bit in the Bronx and Brooklyn etc... only real shitter we found was the metro system... loads of trains not working on the weekend

Re: I’m going New York next Monday.
For your souvenir photos get the Staten Island Ferry, which is free, and go to the back, looking back at Manhattan. You can tie it up with going up the new World Trade Center building, which gives fantastic views from the top. First time there you'll struggle to get the tourist stuff done even. Pre book online wherever possible as you'll queue a whole lot less. There's probably less tourist stuff than London, objectively, but still a ton of it.

If you're near Times Square, which you probably will be at some point, and want a beer at a reasonable price go to Jimmy's Corner. Well worth a visit.

If you're over when a games on as I was a couple of years ago there's a pub where a good few West Ham congregate, Might be the Red Lion in Bleeker Street but I genuinely don't remember, just the match which was shit 1-1 with Villa on Boxing Day.

Go over to Exchange Place for great view of Manhattan. Hoboken has good bars as well. Do World Trade Center museum. Book early morning entrance to avoid the big crowds

If you get time walk around Bedford Stuyvesant late at night and go and knock on a few doors in the 'projects' and say hello to the wonderful people there
